What is Women's Health Physical Therapy?
As much as I would like to take credit for the information that is about to be presented in the first article this month, I can not. In the November 2009 Issue of PT in Motion magazine there is a wonderful article about all of the services that a women's health physical therapist can offer. I am a big fan of not reinventing the wheel, so I thought it best to give you guys an excerpt from the article and then point you in the right direction to get more information. The therapists at Legacy Physical Therapy would be happy to speak with you about any of the treatments or diagnoses discussed in the article. It is our mission to provide clinical and wellness services to women throughout their lifespan.

Women's Health: Across the Spectrum
(Excerpt from Nov 2009 PT in Motion)
In the past, women’s health was most often thought of in terms of gynecological care. Even today, some physical therapists, hearing the words “women’s health,” first think of “pelvic floor dysfunction.” But that’s only one reason that women of all ages need and seek treatment.
"The realm of women's health really looks at physical therapy for a woman throughout her lifespan," say Wendy Featherstone, PT, president of APTA's Women's Health Section and owner of Specialty Physical Therapy in New York. "Besides incontinence and pelvic pain, women's health deals with conditions such as osteoporosis, breast cancer, fibromyalgia, and other disorders that happen to be more common in women than in men."
Susan E. George PT, DPT, MSO, CSWCS, director of Women's Rehab at Centers for Rehab Services in Pennsylvania and director of Practice for APTA's Women's Health Section, agrees. "We treat women from the female high school athlete who is hyper-mobile and is at high risk for developing ACL tears or dysfunction, all the way through to prenatal and postpartum health, and into the geriatric period, where she may encounter urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence, constipation, osteoporosis, or she just wants to keep moving."
